The Lansing Area Safety Council offers the Babysitter Lessons and Safety Training (BLAST) course for students ages 11-15.  In utilizing the curriculum prepared by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the BLAST course provides training in the fundamentals of childcare, household safety, selecting safe and suitable games and activities, choosing healthy snacks, preventing accidents, developing your babysitting business, and so much more.

During the BLAST course, we stress and role play how to avoid distractions, especially as It relates to watching television, engaging in social media, and talking on the telephone. As you already know, the primary responsibility for the babysitter is the kid(s) under their care.  In building credibility for their business and brand reputation, we expose the celebrations and challenges associated with exceeding or neglecting this primary responsibility.

To distinguish us from the competitors, the Lansing Area Safety Council also incorporates the Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification to ensure the safety of infants and toddlers. Our competitors and the curriculum only mandate a review. However, we believe in a higher standard for Mid–Michigan’s children. Consequently, we require certification, not just completion, of Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED.

The cost of the course is $50.00 with a maximum limit of 15 students.  Payment is due at time of registration. This program is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.  To register contact the Lansing Area Safety Council at (517) 394-4614 or visit our website at Each attendee will receive an instructor-signed BLAST completion certificate and a Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification card at the end of class.

The instructor will provide adult supervision. Parents/guardians/caregivers are required to check the student in and out with the instructor.  A sack lunch is required.  A microwave and refrigerator are available.
